Just the Beginning

We performed two planting projects so far, one with an Eagle Scout in a public park and the second on a private farm that is also fostering neglected animals as part of their nonprofit mission. We are touring many sites in the watershed locating possible planting sites on public lands. We are working with the city, esp. parks department to plant trees and working cooperatively on a grant application to California ReLeaf. One of the key members, John Shribbs is Chair of the Tree Advisory Committee for the city and coordinating efforts. Petaluma passed a Climate Change Framework that has tree planting high on the list of things to do and we will be cooperating with the Climate Change Advisory Committee to plant trees. We enjoy the active interest and assistance of city council members and the city manager. We are forming a partnership with STRAW, a subsidiary of Pt. Blue, which has a native plant nursery in Petaluma (previously built and run by J. Shribbs) on a high school campus. Another partner organization River Park Foundation received a million-dollar grant to buy 25 acres in the center of town and also received another million-dollar grant to begin development of this into a park and we plan to help with the tree planting, which should be shovel ready in about 2 years.  We are currently, in partnership with the city, pursuing a grant from California ReLeaf which will permit us to plant 8-10 dozen trees in city parks and will have features benefitting our low income and disadvantaged community members.  This project would start this fall.
